As much as I love Christmas, I always keep it pretty simple. My goal is always to do as little as possible, while still keeping the ambience festive and joyful in our home. It’s easy to be a scrooge and not want to enjoy the beauty of the season because of all the work we take upon ourselves, but it’s also easy to become distracted by the glitter and shiny things and lose sight of our focus on Jesus, God’s gift to us and the reason we celebrate.
You might think as a home decor blogger I’d be in my element this time of year, bringing out all the decorations, setting up Pinterest-worthy vignettes, snapping all the photos and hosting all the Christmas parties. I do LOVE decorating and taking care of my home, it’s a blessing to create a warm home for my family and invite others in to connect and build friendships. I’m grateful every day for that gift. But when it comes to Christmas decor, too much holiday decor is actually overwhelming to me. I’m much happier with a few sprigs of greenery and lots of candles.
Our tree is one of the few places we put actual Christmas ornaments. We love the tradition of family memories – cutting down a tree and filling it with favorite ornaments. But no matter how carefully we choose our favorites, or how perfectly we hang them on the tree, or how lovely it looks in the photos, invariably our two dogs go crazy within days of my virtual Christmas House Tour and start destroying the decor! EVERY.SINGLE.YEAR.
Right before our eyes, before Christmas morning even arrives, our beautiful tree starts to unravel.
You’d think I would know better by now than to trust a crazy pup in the presence of a decorated tree. Our first year with Jack he decided the Christmas tree was put inside for use as his own personal indoor plumbing; we watched him walk over to it and mark his territory. I’m not even kidding. The next year he completely tore all the ribbon and ran off with a starfish ornament in his mouth. Last year when our new pup Lily joined our family, they were double the trouble and chomped up several beautiful ornaments.
But this year I was certain they were more mature and trustworthy. As far as I could tell, they didn’t even notice all the adorable forest and sea-themed ornaments our family carefully hung on the tree the week before. So ironically on the morning I posted part two of my virtual Christmas tour on The Inspired Room, it happened. I left both of the dogs peacefully napping in our family room and went in to my office down the hall. Pretty soon my daughter and I heard a strange rustling coming from the family room. I ran to see what the commotion was and immediately called my daughter in to bring the camera and capture what I had just witnessed.
Before we could rescue it from the clutches of doom, an adorable felt deer ornament had been sacrificed by the furry paws and open jaws of two mischievous pups. The deer’s green felt body, stick antlers, and inner parts were scattered around the room, telltale little bits and pieces of his former self clinging to the dogs’ fur and lips. It was a sad sight.
It is a little silly, but as we stopped for a few moments of silence over the loss of that innocent little deer, we were so grateful for a symbolic reminder.
It is in the unraveling of this world that we are reminded where our true gift is found.
While we are blessed with beautiful things that bring us joy this season, the reality is all the beautiful things of this world are only temporary. Every single thing will unravel in time. There is only One hope for a rescue. By the gracious mercy of God, we are blessed by the One gift that will not be torn away from us, should we choose to receive it. Born on that Christmas morning in a humble manger, God’s precious Son was born to offer us the hope and joy of eternal life.
So even as all the sparkling glitter and wonder of Christmas lights up our homes over the next two weeks, will you join me in slowing down in humble gratitude and awe as we remember where our true gift is found?

Melissa,
Oh, I love the sheepish ” I’m sorry face” of your pup. I had one dog that demolished ornaments and one now that loves to literally shred wrapping paper… but, yes, in the unraveling we are made aware of where our true treasure lies. That’s when I pick up the baby Jesus in our Nativity scene and I am reminded of what and Who really matters. Thanks for a post that brought a smile and a needed reminder of where my hope comes from.
Blessings,
Bev

Thanks Bev! Merry Christmas to you!

Thanks for the laugh this morning. I’m sure if I brought a tree in the house my Hans dog would think it was for the sole purpose of marking his territory too. Since we leave to celebrate the holidays with family I keep my decor minimalistic and skip the tree. Merry Christmas.

Don’t we know how life can unravel almost instantaneously before our eyes? No matter how hard we try… sometimes it isn’t for us to reweave those areas. (Believe me I’ve tried!!) We must wait on the Master Weaver to start the shuttle in His time. I’m grateful that as difficult as this time of year is for me right now, I know the One who not only sees the repaired and finished fabric… but is the repairer as well, and I will continue to work at trusting Him, rather than trying to throw the shuttle myself. That is so challenging. Yet… through it all we’ve come to know Him in amazing ways. And is that not the beauty of The Gift?
Thanks Melissa… I love the pups and the wonderful object lesson they provided. [[hugs]]

Amen, yes it sure is the beauty of the gift, Diane! I love the image of Him being the repairer, too. Merry Christmas to you, may you find many blessings in the unraveled mess. 🙂

Well, at least my labradoodle doesn’t use the tree to mark his territory. So far he has “eaten” five bird ornaments off the tree – came home to find feathers everywhere and glitter around his mouth. He’s never touched the tree before this year, and he’s 11 years old! The tree is currently behind barricades of benches with gifts setting on them so he can’t get close enough to grab another bird – he may outsmart me though. Thank you for the reminder – my tree is NOT the focus here – the gift to the World is the focus we should have, always and forever.
Melissa Michaels says
Ha! That’s so funny about your 11 year old pup! We are moving all of our ornaments higher and higher and may have to resort to fencing haha! So much for a beautiful tree! 🙂

Oh how funny this post was. I so needed to read this and meet you as “one of us” -past the beautiful perfect pictures that I study on your blog! You wrote a simple sentence about it being a “blessing to create a warm home for your family and others” and it gave me the right to enjoy that same passion -even though I often feel it is so temporal -it still matters and it’s how I show love to my family. Thanks for letting us know about your pups and their mayhem….it made my morning!
Melissa Michaels says
Yes, enjoy that gift. It does matter in spite of all the unraveling that happens. Merry Christmas!

We had a small dog who would quietly take an ornament off the tree and bring it to us in her mouth, only to stop short of our hands and purposefully drop it on the tile floor, where it would smash into a thousand pieces. I can’t even tell you what the ornaments looked like, but I can tell you that a) she never had a repentant look on her face like your dog and b) we have the memories that we choose to laugh over.
Such a lovely entry to read this morning. Thank you for the beautiful reminder!

Oh my that is so funny, ah! Hard to not get mad at the little guys, I’m sure all the ornaments must just look like toys to them. xo & merry Christmas, Lynn!

I absolutely love everything you said here and what a way to refocus. I have been working to be ever intentional this year for all the same reasons. I hate hitting December 26 and thinking I could have done better. Thanks for this encouragement to focus in what is eternal rather than what is temporary!

Merry Christmas, friend!

What a great lesson for us all, that if our perfectly planned holiday event or meal hits a snag, all you can do is laugh! Nothing like kids and dogs to remind us of what’s really important. Love this post!

Those poor fur babies look so innocent. Thanks for the reminder and the truth in your message!

I am amazed at the timing with which I receive posts like this!
I have been discouraged this morning with the unraveling of my efforts to stay focused on the true gift of this season. In addition, I just finished sweeping up the shattered pieces of a plaster old-fashioned santa that the cat knocked off the mantle. There was no look of remorse from the cat, by the way.
Thank you so much, and thanks to God for delivering this EXACTLY when I needed it!
God bless!

I love that God speaks to us even though these humorous moments! Merry Christmas, Liz!

This post is one of the cutest. Your pups look so guilty but just too cute to get mad at. The joy and laughter they bring to your family is more beautiful than any decoration. When you mentioned Jack marking territory when you got your first tree I almost spilled my coffee. My dog would probably do the same. But…what do we do? We keep trying and laughing along the way…happy holidays to your beautiful family. I don’t always comment but love your blog and always read it..
Melissa Michaels says
Thanks for your comment, Janet! It means a lot. We do have to just laugh, don’t we? They bring so much joy and laughter that the destruction is easier to deal with. 🙂

This is the 4th Christmas the girls and I will celebrate without Mike, their outstanding father and my beloved husband. Our world unravelled for sure when he died. But I totally agree with you that God has the ability to keep Christmas beautiful even among the scattered parts and pieces of our hearts. And on this Christmas I am amazed to see how God has restored our hearts and rebuilt our family. Only God can heal our broken and shredded hearts and thankfully it is His great delight to do so. God knew nothing else could heal us but GREAT LOVE, so in His GREAT LOVE He sent his son to be our Peace, our Comfort, and our Savior. Merry Christmas!!

Merry Christmas Kristi, big hugs to you.

Thank you for the reminder of why we do celebrate this wonderful holiday. And thank you to the pups for some laugh-out-loud humor (that they are so unaware of).

Oh my word! I’m laughing so hard at your pups, I almost peed! This was hysterical. Seriously now, so true. The gift of our Savior Jesus Christ is the best gift around! Thx for being bold enough to share. God bless you and Merry Christmas!

You couldn’t have put this more eloquently. HE is the reason for the season, not the glitter, not the baking, the decorating or even all the gifting. HE is what makes our season. And as we stop for a moment to remember what is really important, it becomes clear. Thank you for really speaking the truth. And thank you for the funnies about the puppies. I love ’em.

You said it so well…Thank you….. I could say so much more, but thanks will have to do for now.

Melissa, I love how you used the funny mishap to see God’s blessing in the birth of Christ. I did a post today about people losing the Falalala Spirit and how can we do that when we were given the most precious gift of love with the birth of Christ.
Thank you for sharing your wisdom, talents and words with us,
Merry Christmas,

No pets, now, but when I had an Old English sheepdog, she and the cat liked to sleep under tree and every time they got up they took the tinsel, icicles, etc. with them. A friend used to put their tree in a playpen to keep it safe from pets and kids….and to keep the pets and kids safe…..another anchored theirs to ceiling with fish line so would not topple. Merry Christmas and keep your Baby Jesus figure up high…..and the Real One in your hearts.

Melissa,
Those cute adorable dogs! Looks hard to stay mad at them!
This year has unraveled in so may ways I can’t count. I have gone through the gamut of emotions from content to scared out of my wits. Work stresses and dealing with an aging father have just about unraveled my soul! Thank you for the reminder that He is the reason for the season!
I heard a suggestion today that people should throw a Happy Birthday Jesus party and have a bunch of children over. That way they could sing to Jesus and get the true meaning for this wonderful season!
Thanks and blessings 🙂
