When I was little girl, before I even had my own Bible, I received a little plaque.
Someone was giving them out at church, as a prize for winning a game.
I don’t even remember the game we played.
I don’t think it cost very much. It wasn’t even picked out for me.
But, I’ve kept it with me since I was seven years old.
It’s sat on my desk as I learned my multiplication tables and went on to survive the angst of high school years. Later, it got packed along in my suitcase for college. The words on the plaque settled on my heart as I learned to pull all nighters and navigated my way through the drama of bad dates and flaky friends.
When I was limited to pack my world into two suitcases, this plaque boarded a plane to Hong Kong when I went overseas to the mission field.
By the time I returned home unexpectedly, feeling like a missionary drop out, the words printed on the plaque had become bread for my spirit, water for my soul:
“Thou wilt keep him in perfect peace, whose mind is stayed on Thee.” ~ Isaiah 26:3
Words that once were beautiful to memorize became encouragement through the many seasons of life.
It became my life verse — an anthem to my North Star, who was Jesus — as life got more complicated and I was no longer as certain of myself as I once was. Single into my 30’s, now married with children, feeling just as rookie in motherhood as in every new stage of life — this verse continues to encourage and speak to me every day.
You never know how much a faith-inspired gift can become a living touchstone that can give you strength and see you through your days.
Actually, you can.
When God’s word is printed on a gift — whether it’s a card, plaque or frame — it has the power to lift, inspire, comfort and change lives.
This is why it is dangerous for me to step into Christian gift shops, whether online or in the store. I will inevitably squirrel away another plaque, to place around the house, swapping them out every now and then.
I’m trusting one verse will be the hook that lands itself into my sons’ hearts and carry them through life, just as mine has.
As for gifts for friends, it’s a no brainer. Some gifts never go out of style.
