    • i know a couple churches with that tag line and i love the simplicity. it’s really what we need to be about.

  1. I hadn’t realised that it was a life verse but it is. How cool!
“Like a Lily among the thorns is my darling among the maidens.” Song of Sol 2 v2

It tells me that I am greatly loved, that I am going to be in hard places where I feel really out of place but God is with me. I will be different there and it will be beautiful.

  2. You know, Habbakuk 3:18 is my wallpaper on my phone at this very moment 🙂 thank you for the encouragement!

    • that is so perfect! 🙂 i want to rely and trust in Him so fully that all that comes to me is joy because all that comes to me is of Him.

  3. Can I have a few? 🙂
The top one is Jeremiah 29:11-14. I chose it for my friend to use when she baptized me for the 2nd time. I wanted to rededicate my life to Christ. I had fallen away from him for so so long and I needed something tangible that I could see/use/understand so much better than I did as a young girl, so she baptized me again 2 years ago this June!

And Psalm 118:5 “In my anquish I cried to the LORD, and he answered by setting me free.”–this was one of the first verses the same friend above sent me when she and I began talking about my problems at home, leading up to my divorce. I was in anguish and I cried to Jesus all the time. She kept telling me he would set me free but it may not be the divorce I was anticipating, it could be freedom from my past, freedom from my fears, freedom from anxieties etc. It may not be what I was thinking was her point. She was right!

I thought of you the other day Gitzen girl because I had not seen any of your posts recently. I hope today is a good day!
    lisa

    • you can have as many as you like. 🙂 I love the psalms, too. there is always one for whatever emotion i am immersed in.

and you thinking of me made me smile. and grateful. 🙂

  4. I have been crucified with Christ yet nevertheless I live yet not I but Christ lives in me and the life I live in the flesh I live by faith in the Son of God who loved me and gave Himself up for me. Galatians 2:20

  5. Thank you so much for this post – I wrote parts of it in my journal! Several years ago, God prompted me to live especially by these verses from Proverbs 3:3-4 – “Let love and faithfulness never leave you; bind them around your neck, write them on the tablet of your heart. Then you will win favor and a good name in the sight of God and man.”

    • i love verses like that, which are so declarative. there is no question other than to sit up and pay attention.

  6. Thanks Sara,

I did not grow up in a Christian Home but came to know Christ after my first child turned 2 years old. At that time my life verse I choose was “I have no greater joy that to hear that my children are walking in the truth” 3 john verse 4.

I contine to walk in the truth myself now after 5 children. I am continuing to pray and believe this verse for my grandchildren. I also have been memorizing Eph 4 as I desire more intentional living and walking in the truth.

    Blessings, Beth

    • it is such an amazing job to have to bring up your children in Christ’s love. i admire you so much for the dedication and love you have obviously poured into them.

  7. Sara, you always rock my world (in a good way). Thank you. My life verse is Proverbs 3:5-6. Turns out it is 1 of the most common ones. It was given to me in a very dark hour of my life and I believe it speaks to all my hours/days.

    • “depend not on your own understanding…”

it would serve me well to remember this on a minute by minute basis 🙂

      • yep – i thought as an analytical/logic personality type, that my ‘understanding’ was a ‘given thing’ or a ‘right’. The last 5 years have been 1 hard season after another of ‘surrendering my understanding’. It actually took me like 3 times of being in that indescribably hard place before i ‘got it’. Yeah, i’m slow like that 😉 But now this year, i’ve been given a new season of life and i ‘surrender my understanding’ a lot quicker and easier. HE is faithful ALL the time.

  8. I have life verses at different times. Right now it is Jeremiah 17:7-8 (English Standard Version)
7 “Blessed is the man who trusts in the LORD,
    whose trust is the LORD.
8 He is like a tree planted by water,
that sends out its roots by the stream,
and does not fear when heat comes,
    for its leaves remain green,
and is not anxious in the year of drought,
for it does not cease to bear fruit.”

    • he does not fear… he is not anxious…

it’s amazing how easy it is to slip into those modes even tho we know better. wonderful verse!

  9. No, but I think I should go find one too! Love the idea and of course you know I think yours is pretty outstanding. Its how I see you, so it truly fits you as well. Whatever mine is will be pretty simple and down to earth but I’ll definitely have to think it over a bit. Thanks for inspiring me once again to dig a little deeper!

    • it’s fun to think about it… i think i could have many life verses, to be honest. you are living in Truth so well, Vicky. every single day.

  10. Now I must go find my life verse! This was such a beautiful post that really spoke the words I needed to hear today. Thank you.

  11. Oh how I enjoyed reading all the other Life Verses here!

Mine is “But by the grace of God, I am what I am.” 1 Cor 15:10

  12. My life verse is Jeremiah 29:11 “For I know the plans I have for you,” says the Lord,
Plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to
give you hope and a future. ”

This verse speaks volumes to me, even in troubled times with job & life stresses. I can rest assured that All things are working out for the Good & maybe I’m supposed to learn something from all this!

    • this is such a good one for so many. i have it hanging in my house, too… i always need the reminder that they are HIS plans and not mine 🙂

  13. Isaiah 61:1-3 is my life mission: “The Spirit of the Lord God is upon Me, Because the Lord has anointed Me To preach good tidings to the poor; He has sent Me to heal the brokenhearted, To proclaim liberty to the captives, And the opening of the prison to those who are bound; 2 To proclaim the acceptable year of the Lord, And the day of vengeance of our God; To comfort all who mourn, 3 To console those who mourn in Zion, To give them beauty for ashes, The oil of joy for mourning, The garment of praise for the spirit of heaviness; That they may be called trees of righteousness, The planting of the Lord, that He may be glorified.”

Not saying I’m Jesus or anything (He quoted that verse), but I do know I am anointed to bring His light and salvation and healing to the world. And I have a deep passion for those enslaved in sexual slavery.

    • such an amazing calling you have. it’s easy to feel overwhelmed by the task at hand, but every step you take for others makes a huge difference.

  14. “Be still, and know that I am God” Psalm 46:10. I have a few others but this one is my mantra in my head at all times. With Joy, Carey

  15. “But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness and self-control.” Gal. 5:22-23

The verse that was being preached the night I was saved!

  16. Jeremiah 17:7 (in the amplified version)

“Most blessed is the man who believes in, trusts in and relies on the Lord, whose hope and confidence the Lord is.”

  17. I don’t have a life verse. I have so many that have spoken to me at different times. I love the book of I John, read it through every day one summer (only takes 15 min). Now I’m trying to memorize Col. and got woefully behind!
But your verse spoke to me, especially the end: Love the life God gave me, yes. Intentionally. Reminds me of a verse memorized in elementary school, Eph 2:8-10, where 10 says God foreordained works that we should walk in them. Love it.

    • “love the life you’ve been given” is the next part i want to write about on my blog. it’s a great command.

  18. I received my life verse just two and a half years ago ….. 6 months after my husband of almost 25 years, my first and only love, my best friend …. died suddenly, leaving our 6 children and me shattered and paralyzed with grief.
After walking the path of widowhood for several months I found this verse, and remember it every day, because it is now my passion, and what my God has called me to do:
“Praise be to the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of compassion and the God of all comfort, who comforts us in all our troubles, so that we can comfort those in any trouble with the comfort we ourselves have received from God.”
    1 Corinthians 1:3-4

    • Your verse goes right along with, as so many Bible truths do, ‘forgive us our trespasses as we forgive those who trespass against us’. Blessings to you and all who feel the loss of your husband. Dawn.

    • my dad, who had been married to my mom for almost 46 years and is the father of six of us, died very suddenly this summer. the randomness of a bee sting killed him and we are all still reeling, too. i’m so sorry for your loss. truly. and love the verse you found comfort in.

  19. God speaks different verses to me in different seasons. For the past year and a half, while I’ve been clinging to promises that have not yet been fulfilled and learning to wait in stillness and give up the need to control and understand, this is the one that I’m really blessed by:
“Yet he did not waver through unbelief regarding the promise of God, but was strengthened in his faith and gave glory to God, being fully persuaded that God had power to do what he had promised.” Romans 4:20 & 21 (NIV)

  20. Many are the plans in a {wo}man’s heart but it’s the Lord’s purpose that prevails (Proverbs 19:21). Thanks for the encouragement, Gitz! XOXO

  21. Isaiah 55:8
For My thoughts are not your thoughts, Neither are your ways My ways, declares the Lord.

God has shown me over and over again that His plans are so much better than mine. Days I can’t see how something is ever going to work out yet He has a plan that I could not even imagine.

    • isn’t that the truth? now when worry ever steps in i think to myself, “really, sara… you KNOW better by now.” 🙂

  22. This morning, i.e. Morning at the equator where I am, you came to mind and I prayed and wondered how you were. Then tonight, I saw yiur post on (in)courage. 🙂
Thanks for sharing, you always put a smile in my heart.

Several verses that I grew up with, I guess you couldcall them life verses. Great idea, i like it.
    Job 23:10
    But he knows the way that I take;
when he has tested me, I will come forth as gold.

  23. this is just lovely!!! I had to respond you see I had never had a ‘life verse’ either and a few years ago I was going through treatments for breast cancer for the second time (after being clean and clear for 7 yrs) and I was of course getting those outpouring of get-well cards in the mail and lo and behold…a card came from someone whose MOM I worked with and on this card she had only signed her name and underneath her name was written: Jer 29:11 I saw the verse and went straight away to my bible to look it up;
“For I know the plans I have for you,” declares the Lord, “plans to prosper you and not harm you, plans to give you hope AND a future.

right then and there, I claimed that verse for my own. To know that God had a plan for me and a future was so awesome…it has been my favorite verse ever since and so I guess I can call it my ‘life verse’ too! 🙂

thank you for this wonderful post today and may God bless you!

  24. Thanks Sara for an awesome post.
Your comments of “All I have to do is remember that this life isn’t about me… it’s about His intentions for me.” really pricked my heart. May we all pursue his purpose for our lives over our own wants and desires.

I had never heard of a life verse either and I guess I have one depending on what stage of live I am in.

    So Psalm 40:2,3 fits now
He also brought me up out of a horrible pit, Out of the miry clay, And set my feet upon a rock, [And] established my steps.
He has put a new song in my mouth–Praise to our God; Many will see [it] and fear, And will trust in the LORD.

  25. “This day I call the heavens and the earth as witnesses against you that I have set before you life and death, blessings and curses. Now choose life, so that you and your children may live and that you may love the LORD your God, listen to his voice, and hold fast to him. For the LORD is your life, and he will give you many years in the land he swore to give to your fathers, Abraham, Isaac and Jacob.” Deuteronomy 30:19-20

    CHOOSE LIFE.

  26. John 14:6 has been my Life’s Verse for 38 years: Jesus said “I am the Way, the Truth and the Life, no man comes to the Father but by Me”. It really says it all, don’t you think? Jesus is IT. Jesus is all we need. As for what God intends for me to be…Romans 8:29 ‘…conformed to the image of Christ’.

  27. Gitz, Read both this bog, your as well as others, while reading there was this feeling it was you, and when the bottom appeared i was delighted to see your face. If you were sitting across form me you would have found the biggest smile, love your heart and the why you face your life it is a joy to read you. You are an encouragement and i just wanted to say Thank You for sharing you have been a gift to me. PR 3:5,6 faith.

  28. 2 Cor 12:9 But he said to me, “My grace is sufficient for you, for my power is made perfect in weakness.” Therefore I will boast all the more gladly about my weaknesses, so that Christ’s power may rest on me.

Once again, you bring me to tears…

  29. I can’t say as I’ve chosen a “life” verse. Sometimes I choose a verse that is for a season in life. I have one that I found a couple of years ago and posted it on my wall. It is a part of my current journey in life. It serves to be a reminder to me when I read it what I should be doing. Proverbs 24:3,4 “By wisdom a house is built, and through understanding it is established; through knowledge its rooms are filled with rare and beautiful treasures.”

  30. Mine is: I Thess 4-11, 12, Make it your ambition to lead a quite life, to mind your own business and to work with your hands, just as we told you, so that your daily life may win the respect of outsiders and so you will not be dependent on anybody.

This got me through times when people just don’t care to like me. 🙂

  31. I don’t have a life verse, but I love yours and I think it’s perfect for you. I also love this post, it makes me think in a different way – intention. Thanks for making me think.

  32. “The Lord will perfect(complete) that which concerneth me: thy mercy, O Lord, endureth for ever: forsake not the works of thine own hands.” Psalm 138:8
God gave me that verse when I was pre-teen and it has comforted and encouraged me all my life since and I’m 57 now. He promised me He would complete what concerns me…what a powerful promise and what a blessed Father to so comfort His child, especially since He knew all the things that would be coming up in my life. He prepares us as He encourages us and I praise His name for His love and kindness. 🙂

  33. I always feel a little, well, nervous about claiming a “life verse.” After all, it seems so final and narrow when life is so full of variation and God’s word is full of jewels. I think, though, that in the sense that most people use the term “life verse” I do have a couple. They are verses to which I return again and again and again, drawing comfort and inspiration in good times and hard times.

“For I am convinced that neither death, nor life, nor angels, nor principalities, nor things present, nor things to come, nor powers, nor height, nor depth, nor any other created thing, will be able to separate us from the love of God, which is in Christ Jesus our Lord.” (Romans 8:38,39)

“But if any of you lacks wisdom, let him ask of God, who gives to all generously and without reproach, and it will be given to him.” (James 1:5)

    • these are beautiful verses… and i agree that we need ALL His word to get through this life. i do like the idea of always having something at the ready to lean on in those moments when it feels we need Him… which, of course, is EVERY moment 🙂

  34. I don’t have a life verse, but just this morning while reading in Romans 8 and struggling through a particular issue, this passage jumped out and stuck with me all day long. I love how God does that!

37 No, in all these things we are more than conquerors through him who loved us. 38 For I am convinced that neither death nor life, neither angels nor demons, neither the present nor the future, nor any powers, 39 neither height nor depth, nor anything else in all creation, will be able to separate us from the love of God that is in Christ
    Jesus our Lord.

Thanks for sharing. I love putting verses up on my walls in decorative ways, to continually remind me of truths like this!

  35. I hadn’t heard of life verses before this post…but mine is Jeremiah 29:11 “For I know the plans I have for you,” says the Lord,
Plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to
give you hope and a future. ”

A friend gave me this verse.

I also want to say how much I appreciate and am blessed by your blog. I look forward to it each day.

  36. How wonderful. I love having scripture around to be inspired. I like the sound of “life verse”. I am sure it will help keep on purpose too.

    Lovely to meet you.

    Karen

  37. I was sent your blog by a friend who was blessed by it this morning. Now I am too. So many unique life verses, because we’ve each been touched uniquely.

My verse is hanging on the wall right above me now:
“Morning by morning, O LORD, you hear my voice. Morning by morning I lay my requests before you and wait in expectation.” Psalm 5:3

  38. John 3:30: He must become greater; I must become less.
And Micah 6;8 “He has shown you, o man, what is good and what the Lord requires of you: to do justice and to love mercy and to walk humbly with your God.”

  39. “And we know that in all things God works for the good of those who love him, who have been called according to his purpose.” Romans 8:28

    • i think it’s good for me to remember this… that even when things seem too difficult, He is always working for our good. it’s just hard for us to see it through His eyes sometimes 🙂

  40. Loved this, and a timely reminder for me as well. This was my favorite part: “Do you know what else it made me realize? That if He has intentions for my life, and has seen all that has happened and will happen, then I don’t have to worry about how I’ll make it through.

Because if I am still on this earth, it means He has intended for me to do something more. If I didn’t have something more to do, He would reward me by taking me home to Him.”

    Such a blessing this day:)

  41. I could claim hundreds of verses as “life verses.” I need the truths of ALL of them!

One that is regularly on my heart is 1 Peter 5:6-7: “Humble yourselves, therefore, under God’s mighty hand, that he may lift you up in due time. Cast all your anxiety on him because he cares for you.”

Philippians 2:1-18 have been regularly convicting me in the past few months. And James 1:22. And… 🙂

Thank you for sharing your heart with us.

    • i think that’s why it felt so impossible for me to choose, too! i think it’s supposed to be a benchmark… because heaven knows we need all the verses we can get!

  42. I first heard about life verses a few years ago, and I still haven’t found mine. I’m sure He will lead me to it when the time is right. Until then, I flip through the Bible and say, “no, not there, yet.”

  43. Sara,
If one of God’s intentions was for you to write something to touch others’ hearts, then you succeeded!! What a fabulous piece – I loved it from the beginning to the end. I haven’t “found” my life verse yet, although I have several verses that I refer to. I’m hoping that if I keep my heart open, the verse will find me. What strikes me the most is how God intended for me to be here on earth – after all, my mother was using birth control when she became pregnant with me and I was born premature. I had much difficulty breathing, but as you eloquently wrote, God intended for me to survive, grow, have children of my own, and eventually to home-educate. He knew all along that if I answered this call from Him, my eyes would be truly opened. Many blessings to you!
    Carrie

    • it is amazing, isn’t it, to be overwhelmed with the knowledge that He has intentions for us, and we simply have to trust. it always comes back to trust for me.

  44. My life verse has become Isaiah 61: 1-4

“The Spirit of the Sovereign Lord is on me because the Lord has anointed me to proclaim good news to the poor. He has sent me to bind up the brokenhearted, to proclaim freedom for the captives and release from the darkness for the prisoners.

To proclaim the year of the Lord’s favor and the day of vengeance of our God, to comfort all who mourn and provide for those who grieve in Zion- to bestow on them a crown of beauty instead of ashes, the oil of joy instead of mourning, and a garment of praise instead of a spirit of despair.

They will be called oaks of righteousness, a planting of the Lord for the display of his splendor. They will rebuild the ancient ruins and restore the places long devastated. They will renew the ruined cities that have been devastated for generations.”

This verse has given me strength, hope, and encouragment over the years as I’ve struggled with the hurt, disappointment, anger and confusion since my parents divorce, my father abandoning us, and with both of my parents turning away from God to pursue their own selfish desires. It reassures me that even though my father didn’t love me enough or think I was worthy enough to stay and keep our family together, I do have a Father who loves me, won’t ever leave me or fail me and who wants to heal the wounds, restore what’s been lost, and give me a better future so that He may be glorified for turning something bad into good.

    • I’m so sorry for the hurts you’ve found in life, but more grateful that you found solace and strength in the One who heals wounds.

  45. My life verse is more than likely Proverbs 3:5. It’s scrawled in a three-year old’s handwriting on my closet door and has been hung in a spot I see every day for the last 27 years. But I tend to have “season” verses – everything from “Do not fear” (Is 41:10 among others) to “Now faith is being sure of what we hope for and certain of what we do not see.” (He 11:1) to yes, even “Jesus wept” (John 11:35). If He did, I can, too.

Praying for all of your commenters, Sara. Such wonderful personal stories and verses.

    • I remember you saying that he took it once when he was angry… and being so relieved you got it back. I’m sentimental about those kinds of things, too. 🙂

thank you for praying for everyone here, and for me.

    • I had never heard of a “life verse” either, but, I LOVE the whole chapter 3 of Proverbs & I think I have a “life chapter” instead of a “life verse” that I need to memorize & keep to!!

  46. I used to struggle with anxiety. I am not sure how I came across Isaiah 26:3 many years ago, but the power in this verse has freed me from chronic anxiety and the occasional moment when I forget that He is in control ( and I am not). “You will keep in perfect peace him whose mind is steadfast on You because he trusts in You.” Mmmm… I feel more peaceful already!

    • it’s amazing how much being anxious has to do with trusting. I find when I feel out of control it’s usually because I’m trying to take control from him. I’m so glad this verse brings you peace.

  47. “The sovereign Lord has given me an instructed tongue to know the word that sustains the weary. He wakens me morning by morning, wakens my ear to listen as one being taught.” Isaiah 50:4

I spent some time seeking and asking for a life verse and was led to this one quite clearly and it has resonated in me for many years. I do feel blessed in the area of encouraging others and in being able (at times) to search for a special word for someone’s situation and then to share that.
I often feel useless and uninspired myself but knowing that He is able to use the life giving encouragement He has brought to me over and over, to be able to pass that on…. helps me immensely to feel worthwhile.
To be just surviving emotionally but able to make a difference by writing online or phoning a friend with “I’m thinking of you and you are not alone.” This is my gift from Him.
The 2nd part is essential — to know I am wakened morning by morning by Him. I am not a morning person and must focus daily on the fact that this rising and slow beginnings are also a gift. Listen, listen, listen… He has something for me today! Listen…you are being taught. Get the lesson. Share the gift.

  48. again – on the idea of a life verse —- though I do feel I have one (above) as a result of seeking and asking for it…. I also nevertheless have many others that came at certain crossroads of my life and abide strong and deep still.
We need all of His word, of course, and it is good to keep in memory those times that He met us with sustaining grace, encouraging life words, chastising correction, gentle reminders…. It’s All Good!

  49. okay – so it seems I can’t shut up about this now…
This is the first verse I remember learning completely (except maybe John 3:16) when I was a child about 10. It was easy because it was a hymn and music always assists my memory.
“For I know Whom I have believed and am persuaded that He is able to keep that which I’ve committed unto Him against that day.” 2 Timothy 1:12

This has brought me the assurance that my ultimate outcome does not depend on me and my often puny faith… but HE is able to keep what I have committed to Him. What have I committed to Him? Well, that would be > me!
Until when? How long can He hold onto me and never let go? ‘against that day’ The day of His returning.
I do believe He is more than able to keep me from falling and to sustain me no matter what the future holds.

When I left home my dad gave me this verse from James 1:5
“But if any of you lacks wisdom, let him ask of God, who gives to all generously and without reproach, and it will be given to him.”
This was a great idea and especially since I was not much interested at that point in my life in what God had to say. Dad said to remember this if I got in a pickle and needed help. Good plan… and I did. Sad to say, I did not listen to the guidance I was given and could not find the courage to follow the directions I received.
Much later (and many heartaches later) I read the 2 verses that follow this…

6But he must ask in faith without any doubting, for the one who doubts is like the surf of the sea, driven and tossed by the wind. 7For that man ought not to expect that he will receive anything from the Lord, 8being a double-minded man, unstable in all his ways.

Aahhhh … always remember context and beware of grabbing and using verses that suit our purposes for the moment. I would have done much better to not doubt and go with the wisdom that He did indeed give me generously, but at the time, I just did not have enough faith to trust. Driven by fear and the need for apparent ‘security.’

So even though I have a special single life verse there are still many, many passages of scripture that have and continue to speak life to me. I am certain there are many more to come as well.

  50. thank you, Sara, for your amazing words (always), especially:

“If I didn’t have something more to do, He would reward me by taking me home to Him.”

it reminds me of something my mother said shortly before her death and helps bring me some peace about losing her.

and thank you to everyone else for sharing your verses! it’s brought me such comfort and inspired such hope.

  51. 2 Corinthians 1:3-4 is what God has given me for my life verse. “Praise be to the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, who comforts us in ALL our troubles, so that we can comfort those in ANY trouble with the comfort we ourselves have received from God.” (NIV) (Emphasis mine). God has gifted me with being a comforter, an encourager, a Barnabas. This is how , in my life, He has worked all things to my good and to the good of all whose lives touch mine. Knowing that every trouble I go through gives me more experience from which to draw compassion gives me quite a different perspective. Who better to comfort someone who is going through a divorce than someone who has also been there? And on and on. Interestingly, when my son went home to be with the Lord, these were the verses the minister chose for his eulogy.

  52. Life verse: I Cor. 2:2 I am determined to know nothing other then Christ Jesus and Him Crucified
Faith verse: Job 26: He stretches out the north over empty spaces
And hangs the earth on nothing
God breathe verse for me at this time of my life: Isaiah 30:18 Therefore the LOrd longs to be gracious to you, and therefore He waits on high to have compassion on you. For the LOrd is a God of Justice : How blessed are all those who long for Him
