“Dear friend, when you extend hospitality to Christian brothers and sisters, even when they are strangers, you make the faith visible.” – 3 John 1:5
I got the call last Wednesday afternoon in the middle of a meeting. “Hi babe. Fred and Thelma (Let’s use those names to conceal the innocent) are coming to town with their two girls this weekend.” My husband was checking in, but excited.
My gut reaction was, “That’s great news!”
We haven’t seen this family in a long time. Seriously, the last time I saw the girls, they were in diapers and now they are in school. But unexpected house guests in the middle of a crazy, busy season on top of long work days, travel, and little time with each other, made me hesitate.
I pushed through that moment quickly, and responded, “Please ask them to stay with us. I would love to see them and spend some time with the girls!”
The time together was too short and I found myself with misty eyes as their mini-van drove out of our driveway. What I didn’t expect was how God’s promise would be true during their stay.
Men cooking bacon and biscuits before the sun rose, speaking in quiet tones so mama could sleep, little ones telling Jesus they love Him at the breakfast prayer, snuggling in the big comfy chair while Christmas truth flowed over us, small hands braving the cold to play fetch with our very gracious, aging dog, hope-filled conversations about continued prayers, remembering days of old when extra guest rooms were a prayer and how God has blessed.
With a ‘back to normal home,’ I am once again reminded that these moments are what homes and ‘the most special of guest rooms’ are made for – to be a place where love and faith can come to life.
Faith was made visible this weekend, but not in the way I imagined. I am thankful God is full of surprise blessings, even if I don’t believe it until I see it.
Will you make faith visible, throw out the excuses, and open your home?
