Audrey Bunny book

“I think it would be really cool if the mark on the bunny would be a thumbprint . . . as a reminder that God’s hand is on everything, even on what we would think of as a mistake . . .”

(in)courage’s own Angie Smith has learned how to write a childrens book and ended up writing a beautiful children’s book called Audrey Bunny. It’s about a stuffed bunny who is afraid her imperfections make her unworthy of being chosen to receive a little girl’s love. Audrey the Bunny learns the truth soon enough, though – and young readers will learn that everyone is special and wonderfully made by God.

It’s a children’s book, an amazingly illustrated one with special meaning to the author and her family. And it’s a lovely illustration of God’s love for us and His hand on our lives.

We all have marks on our lives and our hearts, things that we see as imperfections, as reasons why we can’t ever be truly accepted and loved. Thankfully, our heavenly Father says to us the same thing Caroline says to Audrey Bunny: “I chose you, and I love you more than you could ever know.”

Those marks? It’s how He knows us. After all, he created us!

I praise you, for I am fearfully and wonderfully made. Wonderful are your works; my soul knows it very well.

    • My favorite will soon be Angie’s book. Sounds like such a wonderful loving way of showing God made us, He loves us, and accepts us. God is not “mad” at you. I just spoke with a little boy who accidentally caused his little friend get hurt. And he was sorry, and he said God is mad at me. God gets a bad rap. And beginning at a young age with books, spoken word, and just by our actions, letting children know Jesus Loves Me. And they can go to Jesus and Pray to him and he listens and cares about us. This also ties into learning to pray/for a small child. Thank you for sharing. I was a children’s therapist working with children in trauma/bereavement and loss/ and this will be an excellent resource. thank you. MY Favorite besides Angie’s new book is of course Goodnight Moon, and the story of Baby Jesus and the Christmas Story/from God’s Word.

  13. My favorite book when I was little was the A is for Apple book with it’s bright green cover…now I think the children’s book I like best is probably Thomas the Tank Engine books…

  20. It’s so hard to choose now that I have a daughter of my own. I remember loving The Balloon Tree by Phoebe Gilman, and the Jillian Jiggs books. But I’m also rediscovering all kinds of books from my childhood, and my husband’s favourite books that I’d not heard of before, like Make Way For Ducklings and Doctor De Soto. Thankfully, our daughter is as keen as we are about reading (more so, actually). 🙂

  21. My very-most-favorite is *The Emperor’s New Clothes.* It’s about childhood innocence and honesty and not being held back by the fear of man!

  23. One of my favorites was “The Little Engine That Could”. It also became one of my daughter’s favorites.

  24. I loved Ping and 10 Apples Up on Top when I was a kid. But now that I have my own kids, I LOVE the Narnia series.

  27. “The Little House” and “The Pokey Puppy” were my faves. Could not wait to have children so I could read them over and over! 🙂

  29. I loved the Little House series as a child. In fact I recently found the set at my parents house again and asked if it was ok if I read them again!

  30. We didn’t have books when I was little . So I will say that Goodnight Moon was my favorite to read to my sons. Thank you for a chance to win this beautiful book that I will read to my grands.

  31. As a child I loved From the Mixed Up Files of Mrs. Basil E Frankwiler. . .sounded like a great adventure to runaway to a museum 🙂

  32. My favorite stories when I was little were all by Shel Silverstein – but my favorite one to read to my daughter right now is one called “You Are My I Love You” 🙂

    • Oh! That’s the title I was trying to think of. We love that story. And there is a Christmas version, too. It’s called, “You are My Miracle.”

  33. This book would be so perfect for my little granddaughter. She is going on 5 and has been ‘reading’ books since she called them boo! I had her in a book club but now I pick out a couple to send every month. I even nicknamed her Izzyboo!

    AND Aug 29th mommy gave her two little sisters to read to! So they got a set of Baby’s First Black and White boos 🙂 They are Sammi & Evee!

    My favorite boo is: Oh, the Places You’ll Go! Book by Dr. Seuss
    even though it makes me cry every time I hear it. I used to read it to my tiny grandson and he is 14 now… They read it one year on TV before a football game and I even cried then! LOL!! Silly Grandma!

    • I love “Oh, the Places You’ll Go”! My sister bought a vintage copy for my daughter the day she was born from a bookstore near the hospital, and every time we read it, I tear up. 🙂

My favorite children’s story lately is The Shape of My Heart… As a working mom, I love reading it to my daughter because I feel like it helps her connect my ongoing love for her throughout our busy days. But there are so, so many that speak to my heart as much as hers. It’s too hard to choose. 🙂

  36. When I was young my favorite was The Pokey Puppy and Mr. Bear Squash You All Flat then when I got older it was the Babysitters Club!

    Now, my favorite thing to see when I am at my parents with my girls is seeing my mom reading them the same books!!

  38. I have too many favorites to name just one! My kids LOVE anything by Mo Willems though. We usually have several of his from the library each week.

  42. My kids loved hearing “A Sleepy Story”. Now I have grandkids, and when it is naptime, that is always the book they pick for me to read. Out of hundreds of books, they still love having that one read.

  45. It would have to be “The Best Loved Doll”, by Rebecca Caudill – It is the story of a little girl and her four dolls. She is invited to a party, but can only take one doll. The invitation boasts of prizes for the best dressed, the oldest and the most talented dolls. The little girl, Betsy, has lots of dolls that could do well in those categories, but she follows her heart and takes Jennifer — tattered dress, looking far older than her years, and all she can do is smile. She’s not the best in any of the prize categories, but she is the best loved doll.

    Sometimes, when I wonder what I have to offer a God who loves so extravagantly, I remember this.

  47. Lots of favorites! Dr. Seuss are fun. Any book by Mo Willems made my kiddos smile. I just love kiddo books!

A Golden Book called Little Mommy was my favorite, when I was a little girl not even able to write yet, I knew it by heart and when my mom would “change” the words, I would say, “No, mommy, that’s not right, it’s ….” and proceed to tell her the right words. Ironically, I have never born children, I chose some by love at a place I worked called Mooseheart and then I married into some teenage boys and am now being blessed by grandchildren. This seems like a book that will be on I am able to share with them, especially our grandaughter, Lexi who was born blind.
    Thanks for writing a book that will tell of our loving Father’s perfect love for each of us, just as we are!

  53. This looks so sweet. I love children’s literature. I’d have to say a favorite is Little Bear, and for older readers, the Narnia series. I also love The Little Princess and The Velveteen Rabbit. 🙂

  54. When I was a young child, my favorite was the rhyme volume of Childcraft. Later, Little Women was my great love. Now as a grandmother, Love You Forever is definitely #1!

    This book sounds very compatible with Brene Brown’s books.

  55. I lived the peter rabbit stories when I was little. I felt like I could go with peter on his adventures and escape what I thought was a boring childhood.

  58. Parts and Even More Parts….my kids crack up with these books and I love the sound of their laughter.

  59. I loved the Peter cottontail all the Beatrice Potter tales. Such adventure and consequences for poor choices lol. But there are many others too!!!

  62. They may not have been really intended for “children” but when I was 11 I started reading Piers Anthony’s Xanth Series. It was a world so literal and pun filled that it really kept me engaged and reading.

  63. So hard to choose! The Velveteen Rabbit is definitely my favorite picture book, but I think Jean Little’s books are my favoritest of all.

  65. I love reading Sometimes I Like To Curl Up In A Ball to my kids as well as I Love You All The Time.

  68. Susan Amantha Cottonwood. It was a story my mom always told us from her memory, she had the book as a child. Then a few years ago I was able to find a copy on ebay to give my mom for her birthday!

  69. The Kissing Hand was a lifeline when my baby had to leave for school without Momma { I was on maternity leave}..that same sweet baby is now a senior in college–sigh 🙂 Blessings and congats!!

  70. ” Little visits with God” was a favorite book of mine growing up. My mom would read it at lunch time for devotions.

  71. Thank you, Mr. Faulkner by Patricia Polacco is a beautiful book about a girl,struggling with dyslexia, learning to read. I read it to my students each year when I taught 4 th grade. It helped create a supportive class climate for those struggling to read. And it is autobiographical, which makes it very special!

  75. Doesn’t matter how old I get, I will always adore “We’re Going on a Bear Hunt” by Michael Rosen!

  76. I always loved books by Dr. Seuss, especially The Places You Will Go, now I love The Giving Tree.

  79. OH, The Velveteen Rabbit always brings me to tears. I just love it. And Dr. Seuss Fox in Sox… I must have read that one a million times getting tongue tied and making my kids and grandkids giggle…

  81. So many favorites. I did love the Little House series, my son loved ‘Ten Terrible Dinosaurs’-I can still hear his little voice reciting it as a child though he is 16 now! My girls liked Angelina Ballerina and a really old book (circa 1966) that isn’t in circulation anymore called ‘Caroline’.

  85. My favorite Children’s book to read to children is “The Little Lame Prince”, by Rosemary Wells.
    It has so many elements, emotions and of course a triumphant ending. The tragic childhood of this little character shocks me every time I read it!

  87. The Secret Garden. Notice the strong ‘period’…no question about this choice for me! I didn’t read this book until I was an adult but all my grandkids have it!

  88. “Love You Forever,” always makes me cry. “The Monster at the End of The Book,” is my other favorite.

  91. My favorite story book is ” The Velveteen Rabbit” because it’s so about being real. In a world where falsehood and wrong impressions abound, we all just want to be ourselves and be loved for it! Plus I love bunnies!!

  93. Right now my kids favorite books are anything by Mo Willems. I also love to read the Giving Tree to them and most Richard Scarry.

  94. Winnie the Pooh by A. A. Milne (for my younger years) and the Little House books by Laura Ingalls Wilder (for my later childhood years)

  98. Good Night Moon is a favorite. I would read it to my sweet niece Rachel to get her to fall asleep, using the same voice intonations and a rhthymical, almost lullaby like voice….sometimes reading it over and over. She eventually wised up that she would fall asleep when Aunt SheShe read that book and started to say “No” whenever I asked “Do you want to read Good Night Moon?”!

  99. Velveteen Rabbit is a favorite, and I don’t know how many times I reread the Little House on the Prairie books…

  109. I just love a book by Kevin Henkes called “Chrysanthemum”! Its about a little girl mouse who has a super long name Chrysanthemum, and all the other kids at school have short names. She gets teased at school until she discovers that her teacher has a really long name too. And the teacher lets her know that if her baby is a girl she may name her Chrysanthemum! So sweet! It helps kids learn that they are special for who they are!

  111. “Tell Me Something Happy Before I Go To Sleep”

    I would always read it to me kids and change the words so it would be just about them, instead of Willa and Otto.

  112. I loved, and still do, “The Velveteen Rabbit” it shows what loving someone can do for them. It is an example of what Gods’ love does for His children.

  115. Hope for the Fowers by Trina Paulus. A different sort of book. For everyone. Except for those who have given up completely. (and even they might secretly enjoy it).

  119. Golden Bear, Golden Bear by Ruth Young / illustrated by Rachel Isadora
    A little black boy and his bear, it had music with it. I can’t read music so I made up my own sing-song tune. Sang it’s way through my first boy with aspergers, and the other two! Love us some golden bear!!

  124. Too sweet! My childhood favorite was the rather obscure King With Six Friends (I was surprised to see someone else mention it!) and my daughter loves Dr Seuss’s ABCs 🙂

  126. I guess I would have to say “Goodnight Moon” My son wanted me to read it to him over and over 🙂 After a while, I could read it with my eyes closed! Blessings to all!

  127. I love reading Our Nest to my kids – beautiful story and illustrations. My favorite from childhood is Sylvester and the Magic Pebble.

  131. I love the book titled “My Many Colored Days.” A Dr. Suess book finished after his passing… wonderful pictures and words that describe how we all have days of all different colors. 🙂

  133. Reading to my 6 children as they were growing up was one of our favorite things to do together! Picking a favorite is toooooooo difficult, however we all still enjoy reading Little House on the Prairie.

  135. ‘The Little Mouse, the Red Ripe Strawberry, and the Big Hungry Bear’ is my favorite children’s book from my childhood – I love to read it to my kids too!

  137. Right now, with my 3 year old grandson, Brandon it’s “The Little Mouse, The Red Ripe Strawberry, and THE BIG HUNGRY BEAR” by Don and Audrey Wood. He and I both love it!

  142. Today is my oldest son’s 59th birthday. When he was in 1st grade we lived in Borneo and had only a few books for the kids, Their favorite was Roody Kazooty — about a baseball player. Crazy story about baseball which their friends knew nothing about.

  144. We have so many favorites it would be impossible to list. I even built my own “Nana library” for the next generation and started picking up all the books that were our favorites so I am always on the lookout for those out of print.

    The one book that my oldest daughter loved was “Marcel the Pastry Chef”. It inspired her so much that she went to pastry school and is now working in a bakery for her career. You never know how a book is going to impact a life. (BTW, that daughter was also teen mom and was still able by the Grace of God to fulfill her childhood dream)

    Books touch our lives in so many, many ways!!

  145. My favorite children’s story was The Ugly Duckling. I was always so happy to see the transformation into the beautiful swan in the end! Thank you for a chance to win a lovely children’s book.

  146. We read a lot of books growing up. But I remember one of my favorite was a big Berenstain Bears book call “The Bears’ Christmas.” I spent hours reading that book and looking at the pictures.

    I am so excited for the release of Audrey Bunny. I can’t wait to get a copy and read it to my girls.

  147. Miss Rumphius, by Barbara Cooney. I love the way it shows the flow of a life, quietly and beautifully, and also how it adds “what I should do” onto “what I want” plans for growing up.

  149. I’ve always loved Mike Mulligan and His Steam Shovel because Mike loves Maryanne (his trusty steam shovel) too much to just toss her in the junkyard when all the other steam shovels are replaced by newer ones. Together, they find a way to be useful and continue to work together.

    Reading books with my two kids I’m getting new favorites — Adventures of Winnie the Pooh and anything by Sandra Boynton

  157. The Giving Tree is by far my favorite children’s book…it also reminds me of God’s never-ending love for us.

  167. I loved all those —-(Encyclopedia ?) Brown books where he took off on wild adventures. And isn’t it awful but I’ve forgotten author, character name, series…but it was about a boy and all his zany adventures. One was when a lady got her diamond in the donut batter and the whole town had to eat donuts at a coffee shop and the winner got prize money…another time he made a huge ball of string (rubber bands?). Ill have to go to the kids section of the library. And of course, Peter Rabbit was a favorite too!!!

  168. I so enjoyed going through the list of comments and found a few books I hadn’t heard of before and will need to check them out! I also was reminded of some books I had enjoyed as a child and had forgotten about them and will have to check them out too.

    Now with my two boys, we love to read and my two year and three year old will just hand me books, or throw them at me 🙂 and say please, please read. Snuggle Puppy by Sandra Boynton, Runaway Bunny by Margaret Wise Brown, and the part when the mother bunny said she will turn into a mother and hug her little boy, I squeeze my two boys simultaneously and say they are my two little boys and I have to hug them, Guess How Much I Love You, I”ll love you forever, Just You and Me Little Bear…..too hard to pick just one.

My very best childhood memories are the nights that my father would sit and read chapter after chapter to the six of us until we feel asleep and dreamed of the animals in the forest who were just like the ones Thornton W Burgess wrote about. I learned to appreciate reading and nature through those books and am happy to pass down that tradition to my children so they can in turn give their families timeless treasures of their time and of the joy of reading about GOD’s creatures.

  171. Good night Moon is wonderful to read at bedtime. another favorite when my children were older was My Side of the Mountain….a great adventure story.

  172. I love children’s literature. My mom taught me to read when I was three. Probably my all time favorite children’s book is, “Are you My Mother?” by P.D. Eastman. Even now, I will randomly ask my Mom, “Hey, are YOU my mother?” Her favorite reply is always, “NO! I am a SNORT!” Then we break out in peels of laughter. (We don’t have any fun at all, can’t you tell?!)

  173. Maurice Sendak’s PIERRE. I love how it encourages caring…not sitting on the fence, but choosing to be a part of life. The rhyme is fun, too.

  174. I have wonderful childhood memories of Mom reading the Ragedy Anne and Andy series. We had a bunch of them and once I learned to read I read every one of them over again. I don’t know, they must be out of print now, but they were terrific stories, so positive. Also Winnie the Pooh, we read that too. I still have a very tattered copy of my book by A.A. Milne that I begged for one Christmas!

  178. Goodnight Moon was a favorite when my children were young. About middle school age My Side of the Mountain was a great read, even read aloud as elementary age was enjoyable.

  179. On of my favorite books it The Bookshop Dog (Martha Jane) by Cynthia Rylant. I would love to own and operate a small bookstore in our small town! This looks like a loving book with a great message!

  183. I loved The Giving Tree and The Velveteen Rabbit. Both exquisite examples of how God loves us and treats us and cares for us. I read these as an early tweener (age 10-12) and knew then that these were words that God was speaking to me. Such wonderful lessons in both of these books!
    I share these with young teens these days. I have several copies that I have shared with my daughter and her friends as well as my friends’ daughters as they grapple with the questions of self-esteem and knowing God’s unending favor and love for us!

  185. Hard to pick a favorite… I would go with the Winnie the Pooh books. I loved all of them; even got the book of songs that went with one of them.

  193. My favorite was a golden book “Nurse Nancy.” Yes, it was very LONG ago. I believe my three grand girls would enjoy “Audrey Bunny” when they come to Grammie’s house!

  201. So hard to choose a favorite! After reading to 3 kids all those years and being an elementary librarian, there are just so many!!! One Morning in Maine is fabulous but what about Alabaster’s Song or the Tales of Despereaux! I would have to pick the original Madeline. My oldest is in college and when she is feeling down or lonely, she will text me the first few lines of the book….in an old house in Paris covered with vines…. and I respond….. lived 12 little girls in 2 straight lines. we go back and forth until we have texted the whole book and then we have to call and laugh about it. So, I would have to say that is my favorite.

  202. My favorite story is Winnie the Pooh. In all the stories he is never abandoned for being a silly old bear. His friends always love him and will never leave him, just like our ever precious God.

  203. Oh, I have so many books that I loved as a child, but the first one I learned to read was Go, Dog, Go. Loved Goodnight Moon when our babies were little too. 🙂

  205. My love of reading came about as a result of my 5th grade teacher, Mrs. Grubbs, reading all the Laura Ingalls Wilder books to us after lunch each day…that was a loooooong time ago, but oh, such sweet memories!!!!!

  212. Oh, this has made me so happy to read all of the titles. Virginia Burton Lee’s books were always wonderful…Mike Mulligan and His Steam Shovel, The Little House were both favorites. I also loved The Mixed Up Files of Mrs. Basil E Frankwieler by e. l. konisburg is another all time favorite…I so wanted to be those kids! I also had a book of poetry by Robert Louis Stevison that I loved to read. I still have that book. As I got a little older, I loved The Secret Garden too. I love to read to this day!

  215. My favorite childhood book was “Are you my mother?” I’m a newly wed and I know my mom took it kind of hard by me moving out and living my own life now, so I decided to give a copy of this book to her, to remind her that although I’m far from home, I always know who to come back to <3

  218. My favorite book to read to my kids is “On the Night You were Born”. It’s such a beautiful book and reminds kids that God made them unique and special. My favorite books as a child were the “Little House on the Prairie” books and “Where the Sidewalk ends”.

    One of his favorite book is “Kiss Goodnight” that we started reading to him as an infant and he is now almost six.

My daughter however prefers to read stories from her children’s Bible she especially loves to hear the story of how Jesus died and she cries, and then she always has to hear how he was risen from the dead and that now he is alive and she just gets so excited about it , it makes me smile every time.

  226. My kids are all grown with their own children but the favorite of my 4 sons and my grandchildren was always “If you Give a Mouse a Cookie. They all loved it and I loved reading it to them.

  228. My mother gave me two book and I learned to read even when
    I didn’t know all the words, I loved how reading at a very young age brightened my world. Grimes Fairy Tales. And Felix The Cat.
    I see so many books listed here even for a great grandmother
    I think I’ll pick out a few to read now. Audrey Bunny would be a
    forerunner. There used to be a book about all little animals in the woods and how they built little ships out of walnut shells or ride a leaf down the stream. It was an amazing story of tiny animals living in the woods and what great friends they became.
    Peter Rabbit & Mr Wiggley was fun also.

  229. My favorite children’s story, when I was child were always the fairytales, like Cinderella. Being a child, raised in an impoverished home, it brought much hope to my little heart that there was higher power who cared and triumph after tragedy.

  230. Oh my goodness there are so many…I have containers full of books from when my daughter and son were little. A few of my favorites would be “Love you forever”, any Winnie the Pooh book, one book that I read to my daughter (now 27) and we still quote lines from was the Muppet Baby’s Bedtime Book. I can’t wait to get this book Angie!!

  231. Charlotte’s Web, all The Ramona Quimby books, and the Fudge books by Judy Blume …but in 4th grade I began to devour the Chronicles of Narnia

  232. I am a first time mom now and my little one LOVES being read to. One of my favorite books to read to her is If I Could Keep You Little by Maranne Richmond. Audrey Bunney looks to be a fantastic book to add to our night time selection. 😀

  244. I always loved Charlotte from Charlotte’s Web. She reminded me of myself – adventure seeker, compassionate, confident, clever and not afraid of her father (well, maybe just a little bit) lol. Her drive to save Wibur was something I always admired about her, even though I was at such a young age.

  246. I always loved to read, but my favorite children’s book is Goodnight Moon. I do not remember having it read to me, but I read it to my own daughter and nieces and nephews quite often!

    Thank you for an encouraging post–especially for young uns. We all have days when we feel imperfect, marked & not good enough. Thankfully God never sees the mark and tells us daily we are good enough, pretty and just perfect for the love and grace He will bestow.

  259. Katie John, by Mary Calhoun, and Mitch and Amy, by Beverly Cleary. They were the first books my mom bought specifically for me from my school’s book fair, and I read them both until they disintegrated.

  260. Betsy, Tacy and Tib series by Maud Hart Lovelace…came from a dysfunctional home, but these stories took me to a place where I could experience normalcy. I even sought out these books as an adult when going through a divorce…

  261. I am Muslim, but I was raised Christian. I’ve been struggling in my faith, and I’ve been trying to refer back to my roots. This book will help with that. I have a few favorites from when I was growing up. The one that reminds me of Audrey was called “Tiko”. Or “Tico”. I am unsure of the spelling. It is about a bird who feels plain. He wishes to be special, so God gives him golden wings, but then, everyone becomes jealous of him. It doesn’t help him make friends to be “better” than them. So, he decides to give a golden feather away to each animal he meets until he is plain again.

  263. I am pregnant with my first child, and I was just thinking today about all the books I want to collect for his library; The Hungry Caterpillar, Goodnight Moon, The Little Engine that Could. I remember my mom reading The Little Engine that Could to me and my siblings, and we would quote it around the house… “I think I can, I think I can.” I am now adding Audrey Bunny to the list of books for the library!

  270. Too many to count…Anne of Green Gables, Little House books, Stopping by Woods on a Snowy Evening – yes, the poem in a beautifully illustrated book! Love Jim Arnosky’s books and wonderful illustrations. Oh no…I’ve left out Hero Tales & all the great missionary biographies by YWAM!

  271. My favorite as a child was “The Pokey Little Puppy”. As an adult, my favorite that I read to my kids is “On The Night You Were Born”- makes me tear up every time!
