“Becoming” is such an expansive word, isn’t it?  We use it about an outfit.  As in, “That dress is very becoming on you.”  OK, maybe we don’t use that phrase but our mothers did.  It means – “it suits you,” “it enhances you,” “it reveals your beauty.”   In other words, “that dress tells the truth about who you are.”  That’s a lot to ask of an outfit but still.

My husband turned his life over to Christ because he saw the person that he was “becoming,” and he didn’t like that person.  He wasn’t loving.  He wasn’t kind or generous or unselfish.  Realizing that, he simply asked Jesus to come in and clean up the mess that he was.  And Jesus did!

“Becoming.”  Every day we are becoming.  Every day we are moving closer toward the person that we want to be.  Or not.  Every thought we accept, every word we speak, every decision we make is moving us.  Toward or away.

It matters.  OK, that truth kind of depresses me right now because I am aware that the thoughts I have been engaging this morning and the choices I have been making as a result of them have not been bringing me Life.  I have not been agreeing with Truth in my inmost being.  So, I’m going to change the direction of my life in this very moment.  I’m choosing now to align myself with God.  See, not only does every thought and choice matter, but also I matter.  YOU matter.

To move toward the woman we so long to become, the woman that God had in mind when he created us, includes believing that what God says about you (and me) in his Word is true – every single moment of our lives.  Whether we feel like it or not.

So what is true?  For us?  We are loved.  We are seen by the One who sees everything and in that space of being deeply known, we are also deeply accepted, chosen and enjoyed.  Yes, enjoyed!  Think on that.  Those thoughts and the choices we will make based on them will be very becoming on us.  They will reveal the truth of who we really are – the very beloved ones of God.
